What is a cross-selling strategy, and how do I decide which one is right for my business?

Cross selling is essentially the prospect of encouraging customers to purchase a product that supplements your product or service.
A simple way to explain this would be the example of selling a set of dedicated car cleaning equipment, and recommending also the cleaning fluids and disposables that go with it. Or even simpler selling cookies and recommending they buy milk too.
